Consistory Notes
January 18, 2012
The consistory meeting opened with prayer and devotion by Pastor Wayne on the possibilities that we have not even imagined that God has in store for us in ministry opportunities.
The elders shared the following:
• Brandon Dunsbergen made profession of his faith in Jesus Christ and was received as a communicant member.
• Dori Robinson was received as a member by letter of transfer from the Park City Community Church, Park City, Utah.
• The baptism of Penelope Schaffer, daughter of Dori Robinson was approved.
• Cody Etter will be publically received as a communicant member on January 22. He previously had made his profession
of faith before the elders last year prior to leaving for boot camp.
• Dennis Dunsbergen & Dennis Van Maanen are elder delegates to Spring Classis at Central College on February 23 along
with Pastor Wayne.
The deacon minutes were read and the treasurer reports approved.
Reports of calling teams were shared and prayer followed.
Various committee reports:
• Building and Grounds reported that a parsonage inspection was completed for any repairs that need to be done. New shingles are needed. Plans are for new shingles to be put on in the summer. Other minor repairs have been completed. The rest of the parsonage is in good shape.
• The church will have some basic wiring done in the near future (some lighting that needs to be fixed, outlets, etc.)
• Various committees reported new members to complete their 2012 membership.
• The Executive Committee reported that a meeting had been held on January 8, 2012 to review what the congregation approved in 2008 concerning the position of a part-time calling pastor. The guidelines of this approved staff position will be used to fill the position. The executive committee will be the contact committee and report back to consistory. We thank Rod Zuidema for three years he served in this capacity. He wishes to continue to do shut in calling on a non-salaried basis as time allows.
• The Welcome Committee is getting a new mat with our church logo on it.
• The Stewardship Committee presented a recommendation of expenditures from the Rozendaal mission fund for the 2012 budget year. It was approved for the following to be distributed: $2,000 – Mission India; $3,000 - Meggan and Pavlos Vasileiadis, Greece; $1,000- Lakeview Camp and $1,000 American Missionary Fellowship. Note: the Rozendaal fund also supports four RCA missionary shares. ($6,000 X 4 = $24,000)
Other business included:
• A consistory retreat will be held at Stoney Point on February 4 from 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. Our theme is “Leaving a Legacy while thinking Outside the Box or What if….?”
New Business included approving two summer interns. One intern will be working with the Youth and Education Department and one will be a worship intern. Grants for one internship have been partially funded by the Synod of the Heartland. $1650 per intern is budgeted.
Building Committee Report:
Much of the evening consisted of a presentation report by the Project Legacy Building Committee. Shawn Huyser and Melvin Van Genderen shared with the consistory the progress of the committee. The committee met on December 22 and January 11 and a February meeting is planned. Revised building plans were presented. These plans represent minor changes that improved the design. These revised plans will be placed in the entry way and the church office for congregational review.
The committee continues to work on the details of the plan in preparation for informational meetings that will be held in the near future.
Other information such as timeline possibilities, required classis notification of a potential building project and congregational meeting guidelines were listed as study items. It was a good presentation and we are excited for the potential ministry opportunities and appreciative of those working on the details of this project.
After the report the consistory then spent time in prayer over this project. Those serving on the Legacy project are: Shawn Huyser, chairman, Shelly Rozendaal, secretary, Jerry Kunce, Ken Van Soelen, Shirley Dunsbergen, Melvin Van Genderen, Norma Harthoorn, Craig Maasdam & Bryan Rozendaal.
Other Information:
Pastor Wayne will be attending the RCA Denominational Planning Conference called Conversations in Orlando, Florida on February 8 – 17.
Gary Van Genderen will be a Classis representative on the steering committee of the Otley Reformed Church.
A $500 grant was awarded to our Youth Group from the Claude Ahrens Charitable Trust. (Note: this was a grant request written by Melinda Hardin).
The Veteran Memorial Board was renovated and updated by Howard De Penning.
God is Good!
For the Consistory,
Pastor Wayne
